Just as the employees from Medler Furniture were finishing the planned carpet installation, the board of directors decided to go ahead and
carpet the two small war rooms. These areas have been covered with dark colored secondhand carpet squares which had been laid down
many years ago. The Medler employees have now completed these rooms.
Volunteers have continued sorting and organizing materials. Most of the boxes are now back on the shelves. Work for the last several days
has been concentrated in the library. Second copies and books which do not apply to Jay County and are seldom or never used, are being
moved off-site to make room for new materials which continue to be added to our collection. The books are also being organized into categories on the shelves. The paintings by Jay County artists which hang up high in the library have been lowered, and spaced to make room for additional paintings. Randy Lloyd has installed new lighting in the library, making it much brighter and easier to see.
While some are working in the library, other volunteers are beginning to set up displays. Some of the showcases are being filled. The
next big job will be to hang the high school senior pictures which have been in the kitchen. These were all taken down so the walls could be
painted.
Although the work may not be completely finished, we are tentatively planning on having a Program Meeting on Tuesday evening, May 21st. Watch for more information about this in next month’s Journal.
We are very grateful for the volunteers who have devoted many hours of time to this project. We are thankful for the $25,000 Heritage Support
Grant provided by the Indiana Historical Society and made possible by Lilly Endowment, Inc., and also all of your monetary donations. Without this help and funding, this project would not have been possible.
Although there is more work to do, we invite you to stop by and see the progress which has been made. The museum is open its regular
hours, but you might be able to get in any day Monday through Friday when volunteers are there.
While there, pick up “Only Jay” t-shirts for you and your family!
